Rhinoplasty for men

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries requested by men. Often, men will seek rhinoplasties for breathing problems and then decide to adjust the aspects of their nose that bother them. There is a world of difference between masculine and feminine noses, and Dr. Miller has the experience and discernment to help his patients of any gender have the nose of their dreams.

What makes male rhinoplasty unique?

Many of Dr. Miller’s patients are men, dispelling the notion that plastic surgery is for women. The nose is the centerpiece of everyone’s face, and deciding to change it is a huge decision that should be undertaken with a seasoned rhinoplasty surgeon. Only experienced surgeons have the expertise to make your new nose blend in naturally with the rest of your face. When men pursue a cosmetic update to their noses, they often seek the following:

  • Want nose to have a straighter profile
  • Reduce the size of prominent noses
  • Smooth out irregularities on the bridge
  • Want a refined, elevated tip that won’t dip when they smile or laugh
  • Bring down the slope of the nose for a more masculine feel
  • Make the nose more symmetrical

Overview of the procedure

Since every patient is different, every rhinoplasty is unique. Typically a rhinoplasty takes between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. They can occur under local anesthesia with sedation, like the micro rhinoplasty, or general anesthesia if the scope of the operation is significant. Depending on the type of changes Dr. Miller makes, incisions can be placed internally, in the columella (the part of the nose that separates the nostrils), or just outside of the nostrils in the crease between the nostril and face.

Recovery

Recovery time varies from patient to patient, and is dictated by the degree of correction performed. In general, patients should budget at least two weeks for post-operative recovery. The first few days are the toughest, and patients will experience nasal congestion and discomfort. Bruising and swelling are to be expected, but this will subside in a few weeks. If there are any external incisions, those will fade over the next three to six months.

After a week, the cast will be removed and the patient can start light socializing. Patients should get clearance from Dr. Miller and use common sense with physical exercise; if any activity causes swelling, headache, or pain, stop immediately. Note that it takes 12-18 months for the nose to settle into its final shape. Dr. Miller will schedule follow-up appointments to make sure healing goes well.
